Just as it says. Hoverflies are pretty small, so with a 1:1 macro this was about as large as I could get him, the thistle flower itself is pretty small as it's just starting to emerge.

A very nice shot,
but a slight miss on the ID though.
This is one of the Syrphidae family - AKA a Hoverfly. ((You can tell by the short antenna on it's face.))
They're a great boon to any garden; the adults are pollinators and the larval grubs eat aphids.
